Last winter, a group of my friends organized a winter weekend adventure. We decided to ski into Cairn's Cabin, a log cabin with a wood stove, loft sleeping and a few windows for light - no electricity and no running water. A few candles were left behind from previous skiiers to shed some light on those long winter nights. On top of that, to get to Cairn's Cabin, we had to ski in ~14 km - and this was no easy cross country ski - whoever said that the prairies were flat obviously didn't try to adventure into Riding Mountain National Park. With heavy packs and momentum - someone was crashing into a tree around every sharp turn! My group skiied in during the day on Saturday - some of our friends chose to ski in later in the day and ended up guided only by their headlamps and startlight. Good thing they had the dog who pulled a sled full of supplies like much needed food and wine! That box of macaroni and cheese along with a garlic sausage ring never tasted so good - I think I burned more calories in that weekend than during the rest of the Winnipeg Winter! My friend's dog ate someone's sandwich - and before nightfall all of the wine had been drank. There was nothing to do but sleep in the loft, where the hot air from the woodstove rose up and mixed with the cold air let in from a tiny loft window. Never has a winter weekend been so inspiring and filled with laughter from friends! We will be back next year!
